چکیده

Synechococcus, C-Phycocyanin, Sulfur Nutrition The cyanobacterium Synechococcus 6301 is able to use a lim ited number o f sulfur compounds as the only source o f sulfur supply such as sulfate, thiosulfate, thioacetic acid, mercaptoacetic acid, thioacetamide, L-cysteine and glutathione. Compounds containg thioether linkages such as methionin or S-methylcysteine and all compounds investigated so far containing sulfonic acid structures do not support growth. Growth inhibiton was observed by addition o f aminomethanesulfonic acid or cysteamine. When non-growth sustaining sulfur compounds are added as sulfur source, the C-phycocyanin content o f the Synechococcus cultures decreased drastically, causing a shift in color from bluegreen to yellow-green. An analysis reveals the degradation o f C-phycocyanin whereas chlorophyll formation still proceeds to a certain degree in growing sulfur-starved cells. Supplem entation o f a suitable sulfur source induces a period o f intense and preferential C-phycocyanin synthesis prior to resumption o f normal growth.

Nitrogen and Sulfur Starvation of the Cyanobacterium Synechococcus 6301 An Ultrastructural, Morphometrical, and Biochemical Comparison

The effects of nitrogen and sulfur limitation on various cellular parameters of the cyanobac terium Synechococcus 6301 were studied by electron microscopy, morphometry and biochemical methods. Nitrate and sulfate starvation for 70 h results in a massive glycogen accumulation in parallel to a loss of soluble protein and chlorophyll. Phycobilisomes disappear prior to the degra dation of photosy...

Promoters of the phycocyanin gene clusters of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942.

The cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942 has duplicated phycocyanin subunit gene clusters cpcB1A1 and cpcB2A2, which are identical to each other and to those of Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 6301 (Anacystis nidulans). Nucleotide sequences of the 428 and 286 bases of the 5' non-coding regions of the cpcB1A1 and cpcB2A2 clusters, respectively, of strain PCC 7942 were identical to those...

Structural Studies on Phycobiliproteins

Studies of the amino acid sequence of the p subunit of Synechococcus sp. 6301 C-phycocyanin are presented. Sequences were determined of the NH,-terminal cyanogen bromide peptide (residues 1 to 78), and of the cyanogen bromide peptide (residues 86 to 133), containing the sole free cysteinyl residue of the protein. The overlap between these two peptides and the two other cyanogen bromide peptides...

Optimization of light conditions by affecting the growth and production of C-Phycocyanin in Spirulina platensis microalgae

Spirulina microalgae are a rich source of protein and valuable biological compounds. One of the most important Spirulina microalgae pigments is phycocyanin. Phycocyanin is widely used in industries as a natural blue pigment and it’s also an effective antioxidant. In order to improve phycocyanin production as well as Spirulina growth, by autotrophic cultivation considering that autotrophic culti...

Exclusive A-ring linkage for singly attached phycocyanobilins and phycoerythrobilins in phycobiliproteins. Absence of singly D-ring-linked bilins.

Previous spectroscopic studies on the phycocyanobilin-containing peptide beta-2T from Synechococcus sp. 6301 C-phycocyanin and the phycoerythrobilin-containing peptide beta-2TP from Porphyridium cruentum B-phycoerythrin indicated a different single thioether mode of attachment, postulated to be through the D-ring of the tetrapyrrole, in contrast to the A-ring linkage established for the other s...
